215 YEARS OF POLISH PLANT NURSERY
(Summary)
The year 2014 marks the 215th
anniversary of the establishment of the Polish nursery. On this occasion, it is
worth recalling the contributions to the nursery and fruit growing centres by
the Polish magnates, farmers and the Church in the areas of Malopolska (former
Eastern Galicia). In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century,
Horticultural nurseries existed in these areas belonging to the magnates such
as, Pawlikowski in Medyka, Sapieha in Krasiczyn, Lubomirski in Miżyniec and
Charzewice, Brunicki in Podhorce and Fredro in Fredrow, among others.
In the former Russian zone, not
far to the north from Lviv and Przemysl, there were fruit tree and woodland
tree nurseries owned by the Zamoyski Estate in Florianka in Zwierzyniec.
This paper presents a catalogue
of the nurseries of the Zamoyski Estate: “Katalog drzew owocowych szkółek
Floriańskich pod Zwierzyńcem Dóbr Ordynacji Zamojskiej, założonych w roku 1897 w jesieni na gruncie więcej piaszczystym,
miejscami o podłożu szczerkowatem, przeznaczonym do hodowli jabłoni i wisien, a
miejscami z podłożem o marglu wapiennym, przeznaczonym dla hodowli: grusz, śliw
i czereśni” („The catalogue of
Zamoyski’s Estate Florianskie fruit tree nurseries in vicinities of
Zwierzyniec, founded in autumn 1897 on more sandy ground, gravelly places,
designed for cultivation of apple and cherry trees, and in places with marl
limestone, designed for growing: pears, plums and cherries”). Records for the
Zamoyski Estate woodland tree nursery can be found in the State Archive in
Lublin under the reference code AOZ 7732. The above information comes from the
collections of the library of Roztoczanski National Park in Zwierzyniec.
